Save the Dolphin Feeding at Tin Can Bay |
|||
On
28th September 2005, the Queensland Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) & Minister for the Environment Desley Boyle ordered that the
feeding of wild dolphins at Snapper Creek, Tin Can Bay was to cease immediately.
( Note: After sustained media & public pressure Premier Peter Beatty
has now stepped in to overturn the ban and put in place a much better
system of supervision and monitoring Special
Thanks to Steve Walker & Family at Barnacles for their Courage to stand up to
an unreasonable government decision)
If you would like to know more about this situation please follow the links at the bottom of the page to both the EPA information and Media stories. I firmly believe that the positive effect on visitors to Snapper Creek Tin Can Bay of being up close to a rare and magnificent animal such as "Mystique" and the opportunity to educate visitors and the public about the challenges that he and other marine mammals in the Tin Can Bay/ Great Sandy Straights area face now and into the future justifies the continuation of the present interaction. The EPA's own guidelines for to the feeding are explained and supervised by a dedicated group of volunteers at the Tin Can Bay Dolphin Research Centre which is provided by Barnacles Cafe. Thank you for your support lobbying Minister Boyle & Senator Campbell to allow the feeding of Wild Dolphins at Tin Can Bay to continue under the arrangements that have been followed since 2000, We are still waiting for sufficient resources to be provided to the Maryborough EPA office to allow the installation of information signage at all boat ramps in the Tin Can Bay/ Great Sandy Straits area to educate the visiting and boating public about the Indo-pacific Dolphins and other marine life in the area with the provision of information pamphlets and stickers to all boaties launching at the boat ramp outlining what they need to do to comply with existing laws in relation to approach distances and not feeding dolphins outside of the designated feeding area plus contact details for marine rescue in case they come across any injured wildlife. |
